Welcome to SEO Article Writing 101, the beginner’s introduction to optimizing web content. This article will cover some of the essential steps of creating articles for the web that all beginners should keep in mind.
Keep It Simple
Simplicity is the key lesson you should take away from SEO Article Writing 101 above all else. Online writing should generally be written at a level that can be understood by a 10 or 11 year old child. While most adults can read complicated English, that doesn’t necessarily mean they will actually bother to do it.
When people search for information online, they are usually looking for quick and simple answers to their questions. Your website should present written material in a concise, easy-to-understand way.
Obviously this will differ a little from site to site – for instance, on this site I write at a higher level than I might write on, say, a pet website. This is because I know business owners and writers will apply a keener intellect to what they read than someone who just wants to find out how to get rid of fleas from their pet dog or cat.
Keyword density is as aspect of SEO article writing that most newcomers to the field get wrong. They overuse keywords, which causes the search engines to identify them as spammers. Don’t fall into this trap as it will kill your page rankings and you will not get traffic to your website.
The generally accepted “right” keyword density is somewhere around 2%, although there’s no need to get too specific about this. Around 2% is the general guideline, but this is not as big of a factor as it used to be – there are other more important elements to optimizing a page than the number of times a keyword appears.
Generally, you want to use a word just enough so that the search engines “know” what the page is about, without indicating to the search engines that you’re trying to “trick” them by repeating a keyword too often.
Organize Your Ideas
Try not to ramble too much or write extremely long articles. You will find some successful business sites with a lot of copy on each page, but they are the exception, not the rule.
Pages should generally be between 500 – 1000 words each and revolve around one main topic. If you are rambling on longer than 1000 words, break the information up into several pages and try to find other related keywords to base each article around.
Don’t Trick Mother Google
You may have heard about the difference between “white hat” and “black hat” SEO. Black hats are the ones who use all the sneaky, dishonest and often plain illegal methods to try to reach the top of the search engines.
White hats, on the other hand, are those who attempt to create genuine value and play by the rules outlined in Google’s own optimization tips.
Many black hat “SEO gurus” make their fortunes from fooling naive newcomers to Internet marketing that their techniques will generate overnight riches. Here’s the best advice: save your money and your time and ignore black hat techniques.
Black hats are up against a team of the greatest minds in the world in Google’s spam prevention department – in the long run, Google always gets smarter and the black hats have to play catch up, or die.
White hats, on the other hand, aim to produce high quality websites which are well-optimized and will always rank highly by virtue of the value they offer. Black hat techniques can work in the short term, but they never last. Don’t build a house on shifting sand.
Mother Google resents attempts to trick her, and your site will be penalized as a result if the Google algorithm picks up black hat techniques related to your website.
